Charles E. Flanagan, Jr. 5/1/2009 In 1966, the family of the late Charles E. Flanagan, Jr., former Nantucket firefighter and emergency medical technician, and a member of the class of 1971 was pleased to announce the Charles E. Flanagan, Jr. Service Scholarship. Charlie believed in and lived the tenets of "service above self" and personally persevered in spite of all obstacles. In the early morning hours of March 22, 1982, while recovering from surgery, Charlie was first on the scene of a car accident that occurred outside his Union Street home. Without regard for his own safety or well-being, he pulled two unconscious men from the burning vehicle and assisted in the rescue of a third. As a result of the rescue effort, Charlie lost his eyesight. Determined to improve his situation, he attended college and achieved Associate's and Bachelor's degrees in sociology and criminal justice. It is with pride and confidence that the Charles E. Flanagan, Jr. Service Scholarship in the amount of $500.00 is awarded to a student who has attended Nantucket High School and has exhibited the qualities and perseverance that Charlie lived by.
